Sens Off To a So-So Start
Most experts had the Ottawa Senators pegged as a bubble playoff team before the season. Even the most optimistic supporters couldn’t expect them to keep up with their amazing winning pace they had in their epic run to end last year. But, one of the final playoff spots in the east was plenty reasonable for fans to hope for.
If the season were to end today (that would be strange), the Sens would be on the outside looking in, as they currently sit 10th in the east, 2 points out of the final playoff spot. They are 5-4-2 with a goal differential of -1… very mediocre so far. What’s most surprising is that they’ve been great on the road (4-1-0), but horrible at home (1-3-2). You figure this will even out sooner rather than later.
The most encouraging element of the season so far is that their best skaters have been performing well. Mark Stone is showing no signs of a sophomore slump as he leads the team in scoring with 13 points and he is followed by Kyle Turris, Erik Karlsson and Bobby Ryan – exactly who the Sens expect the most offensive production from. They are all averaging at least a point per game.
In net, Craig Anderson is off to a bit of a slow start with a .904 save percentage (he posted a .923 last year), but he has a long enough track record that he should be expected to improve. There was a lot more uncertainty heading into the season about Andrew Hammond (aka the Hamburglar), who came out of nowhere last season as a 27 year old rookie to post an insane .941 save percentage and 20-1-2 record to lead the Sens to the playoffs. His success led the team to training former highly touted prospect, Robin Lehner, to the Sabres in the offseason. Plenty of people were concerned that Hammond may have been a one-hit-wonder, but so far (albeit in a very small sample size) he’s looked steady in the two games he has played, allowing 5 goals on 62 shots for a .919 save percentage.
For the Sens to find their way into the playoffs this season, they will need their top players to continue producing, their starting goaltending (whether it is Anderson or Hammond) to improve, and to get more support from their depth players.
Certainly, they will need to improve their home record. And that’s one area where the Senators fans need to step up. Go to the games and make life hard on the opponents!
